School supplies

The primary schools in the sanctuary area are very under resourced and the funds provided by Friends of Wechiau are an important addition for the education of young people. We currently provide approximately £165 per year for supplies to be bought for one selected school.

The educational supplies are distributed at a meeting at the school with the students, their parents and the teachers.

Tree school Talawona, 2002

There have been huge advances in primary school education since the trustees visited Wechiau in 2002. Then children were being educated under a tree by a volunteer teacher.

In 2009 three of the FoW trustees visited Wechiau and participated in the distribution of the school supplies at the Heather Graham School at Talawona which replaced the tree school.  You can read more about the visit here.

We are grateful to Donna Sheppard (Calgary Zoo) and R.Y.Abudulai Issahaku (Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary) for supplying many of the photographs displayed on this website.
